L’argent que nous utilisons quotidiennement n’a en soi aucune valeur. La monnaie est un moyen d’échange qui a supplanté le troc en facilitant le commerce depuis l’Antiquité. Plutôt que d’échanger tout, les êtres humains ont inventé une méthode plus pratique qui donne une valeur aux choses ou aux prestations que l’on veut troquer : la monnaie.
Mais depuis, le numérique est passé par là en dématérialisant quasi totalement nos transactions financières. Le bitcoin est allé plus loin en proposant une monnaie 100% numérique gérée par ses utilisateurs avec un système qui inscrit chaque transaction dans un grand livre comptable en ligne, public, anonyme et infalsifiable.
Une monnaie pour ses 2,3 milliards d’utilisateurs
En s’inspirant de ce modèle, Facebook met en place sa propre monnaie virtuelle dénommée libra. Elle permettra d’ici à 2020, aux 2,3 milliards d’utilisateurs du réseau social d’échanger des fonds sans commissions bancaires et de payer des services en ligne ou dans la vie de tous les jours. « Une offensive sur le commerce en ligne mondial qui inquiète en premier les banques », nous explique Nofel Goulli de BearingPoint, une société de conseil en investissements et en technologie pour les entreprises.
Une trentaine de firmes dont Visa, PayPal, Uber, eBay, Spotify, ou encore le français Iliad, la maison mère de Free ont déjà investi chacune 10 millions de dollars dans le projet du géant américain. Facebook compte connecter sa monnaie Libra à ses messageries WhatsApp et Messenger et à celles de ses partenaires.
La monnaie virtuelle sera indexée sur l’euro, le dollar, le yen ou encore la livre, afin d’assurer sa stabilité. Selon les rumeurs, Facebook envisagerait même de rémunérer ses propres employés avec sa monnaie.
